Saturday, May 31, 2008“Anywhere Is Possible.”
We went into this movie not expecting much. The concept looked fun from the preview, but we were iffy on Hayden Christensen’s acting abilities after his less than stellar performances in Star Wars Episodes II & III. So, he had nowhere to go but up, unless he stayed where he was… And luckily he didn’t. He actually did a great job. Rachael Bilson was just… ehh… the British kid was great - Jamie Bell. And Sam Jackson was… well.. SAM JACKSON. He was kind of over the top, but what can you do. It’s why we love him.
So, the premise is, due to a genetic ‘anomoly’ Hayden’s character has the ability to ‘jump’ to anywhere in the world - kind of like ‘beaming’ in Star Trek, without the equipment. He just has to focus on where he wants to go and he gets there [sounds good to me - where do I sign up? F the oil companies and airlines!]. As the ability gets stronger, he can also take people or things with him, which makes it more interesting. And he finds out that this ability has existed for centuries, and so has an organization who’s sole purpose is to hunt and kill people with these abilities.
There were some fun action sequences, great special effects, some good character conflicts & moral dilemas and a bit of a twist to the ending. Overall, a fun ride and the pace was great. They definitely left us with some questions, so maybe they’ll make a sequel. I’d give this a 3 1/2 out of 5. Worth a rental.
